How much does a PODS-style container move cost?

A container move has three parts: the monthly container rental, the transport (local delivery or long-distance line-haul), and any labor you hire to load. PODS publishes no rate card, so these are PODS's own sample estimates, which include one month of rental and leave out insurance and taxes:

What affects PODS container moving costs?

Container count and size

A studio fits one 8-foot container. One 16-foot holds a home with up to two bedrooms; a 3-bedroom needs a 16-foot and an 8-foot. The 12-foot is for local moves, typically under 50 miles. A second container costs nearly as much as the first.

Rental duration

The first month is included. PODS's July 2025 averages for an extra month run $139 to $239 per container, and some 2026 quotes ran higher. If your move-out and move-in dates are weeks apart, budget for the extra container months.

Distance

Local moves are a delivery-and-pickup fee. Long-distance transport is quoted per lane, and miles predict little: in PODS's own samples a 1,080-mile move cost more than a 2,790-mile one.

Loading labor

You can load it yourself for free or hire loading help; HireAHelper prints $80 to $120 an hour for a two-mover crew, labor only. Budget the hours it takes to load at one end and unload at the other.

How many containers do I need?+

Plan one 16-foot container for a home with up to two bedrooms. PODS's sizing post puts a 3-bedroom at a 16-foot and an 8-foot. A studio fits one 8-foot container, and the 12-foot is for moves under about 50 miles.

Is a moving container cheaper than movers?+

Usually, for the transport itself. HireAHelper's 2026 medians for a 3-bedroom move of about 2,400 miles are $4,662 for a container and $9,255 for full-service movers, because you supply the labor to load and unload. You trade money for effort.

How far in advance should I book a container?+

PODS lists container availability and time of year among the factors in a quote, so book as soon as your dates are firm, especially in peak season (May through September).

Does the price include loading and unloading?+

No. A PODS quote covers the first month of rental, delivery, pick-up and, on a long-distance move, transportation. Loading and unloading are on you, or you hire labor separately at an hourly rate.

What if my new place is not ready yet?+

Keep the container in the company's storage yard and pay the monthly rental until you are ready for redelivery. That is the main advantage of a container over a rental truck.

Are container moves good for long-distance?+

Yes, especially cross-country. You avoid driving a large truck thousands of miles, and the container doubles as storage on either end. The trade-off is a transit window that depends on the lane, so ask for it in writing.
