COST

How much does a PODS-style container move cost?

A container move has three parts: the monthly container rental, the transport (local delivery or long-distance line-haul), and any labor you hire to load. For a typical household, expect:

Local container move (under 50 mi)1 container, 1 month rental + local delivery
$400 – $900
Regional container move (50 – 500 mi)
$800 – $2,500
Long-distance container move (500 – 1,500 mi)
$2,500 – $5,500
Cross-country container move (1,500+ mi)
$4,500 – $8,500
Extra month of storageper container, if your dates do not line up
$150 – $250 / mo

Containers sit between renting a truck yourself and hiring full-service movers: you load, they drive. Most households need one 16-foot container per two bedrooms.

WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE

What affects PODS container moving costs?

01

Container count and size

A studio fits one 7-8 ft container; a 3-bedroom home usually needs one to two 16-foot containers. Every extra container adds rental plus transport.

02

Rental duration

The first month is bundled; extra months run $150-250 per container. If your move-out and move-in dates are weeks apart, budget for storage-in-transit.

03

Distance

Local moves are a flat delivery-and-pickup fee. Long-distance is line-haul priced by mileage, so a cross-country container costs several times a local one.

04

Loading labor

You can load it yourself for free or hire loading help at $50-80 per mover per hour. A two-mover crew for a couple of hours is common on each end.

METHODOLOGY

This estimate is built from published container-service rate tiers (7-8 ft, 12 ft, and 16 ft equivalents), typical monthly rental, and mileage-based line-haul rates for long-distance moves. It assumes you load the container yourself; add loading labor if you hire help.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

PODS moving cost FAQ

How many containers do I need?+

Roughly one 16-foot container per two bedrooms of household goods. A studio or one-bedroom fits a single smaller (7-12 ft) container; a three-bedroom home usually needs one large plus a small, or two large containers.

Is a moving container cheaper than movers?+

Almost always, for the transport itself. A container move typically runs 30-50% less than full-service movers because you supply the labor to load and unload. You trade money for effort.

How far in advance should I book a container?+

Two to four weeks in peak season (May-September), one to two weeks off-peak. Container availability tightens fastest at month-end when most leases turn over.

Does the price include loading and unloading?+

No. Standard container pricing covers the container, delivery, transport, and pickup. Loading and unloading are on you, or you hire labor separately at an hourly rate.

What if my new place is not ready yet?+

Keep the container in the company's storage yard and pay the monthly rental until you are ready for redelivery. That is the main advantage of a container over a rental truck.

Are container moves good for long-distance?+

Yes, especially cross-country. You avoid driving a large truck thousands of miles, and the container doubles as storage on either end. The trade-off is a longer transit window than a dedicated truck.
