05 // COST GUIDE

What movers actually cost.

The calculator above gives you a personal number. Below: how those numbers get built, what drives them up or down, and the line items that quietly turn a $4,000 quote into a $7,000 invoice.

How much does a moving company cost?

Pricing varies sharply by tier and by distance. Three honest ranges for a 3-bedroom household:

  • Local move (under 50 miles): $1,200–$3,500 with a full-service crew, $400–$900 with a moving container, $200–$600 if you rent a truck and recruit help yourself.
  • Long-distance move (500–1,500 miles): $5,500–$9,500 full-service, $3,500–$6,500 container, $2,500–$4,500 DIY.
  • Cross-country move (1,500+ miles): $7,000–$13,000 full-service, $4,500–$8,500 container, $3,500–$5,500 DIY.

Smaller homes drop these numbers proportionally. Full pricing teardown →

What changes the price the most?

In order of impact: volume, distance, service tier, and timing.

Volume swings the headline number more than anything else. Two houses with the same bedroom count can differ by 50% in cubic feet. Distance matters most past 500 miles. Service tier can swing the same move by 2–3×. Peak season (May–September) adds 15–25% on top.

Hidden costs to watch for

Things that don’t show up in the headline quote:

  • Long-carry fees. If the truck can’t park within ~75 feet of your door, $50–$150 per 50-foot increment.
  • Stair fees. Per flight, per item, or per move. A walkup adds $200–$600 routinely.
  • Shuttle fees. When the long-distance truck can’t reach your destination, $400–$900 to shuttle to a smaller truck.
  • Storage-in-transit. If your dates don’t align, $200–$500/month plus a re-delivery fee.
  • Valuation coverage. Federal default reimburses only $0.60/lb. Real coverage is 1–3% of declared value.

On any cross-country move, two of these will probably appear. How to read the estimate paperwork →

How to cut your moving cost

Five moves that have real savings, in order of impact:

  1. Declutter first. Every cubic foot you don’t move is the cheapest cubic foot.
  2. Move off-peak. October through April is 15–25% cheaper than summer peak.
  3. Pick the right tier. Most full-service quotes for healthy adults could be replaced with a container at half the cost.
  4. Get three written quotes. The honest middle of three quotes beats the outlier. If one comes in 30%+ low, it’s a lowball.
  5. Pack yourself. Full-pack service is $1,500–$3,000 on a 3-bedroom. Most of it you can do in a weekend with $200 of supplies.
