Packing

How many boxes do you need?

Recommended boxes

~54 boxes

Tailored to what you told us. Add 10–15% as a buffer so you don't run short mid-pack.

  • Small (book boxes)16
  • Medium (workhorse)22
  • Large (bulky-light)9
  • Wardrobe (hanging clothes)3
  • Dish-pack (fragile)4

This is an estimate based on typical packing densities for a home your size, adjusted for how many people live there, how much you own, and the rooms that eat the most boxes (kitchen, bookshelves, garage). Decluttering before you pack is the cheapest way to cut the count.

COST

How many moving boxes do you need?

Most people badly underestimate boxes and end up making a midnight supply run. As a rough baseline by home size:

Studio / 1 bedroom
~20 – 30 boxes
2 bedrooms
~40 – 60 boxes
3 bedrooms
~60 – 90 boxes
4+ bedrooms
~90 – 130 boxes
Box supply budgetnew boxes + tape + paper; less if you source used
$100 – $350

The calculator above breaks this into box types: small (book boxes for heavy items), medium (the workhorse), large (bulky-but-light), wardrobe (hanging clothes), and dish-pack (kitchen and fragile).

WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE

How many boxes of each type do you need?

01

Small boxes (book boxes)

For heavy, dense items: books, records, canned goods, tools. If a box feels light when full, you used the wrong size. Keep these under about 40 lbs.

02

Medium boxes

The everyday workhorse: kitchenware, toys, small electronics, décor. You'll use more of these than any other size, so buy extra.

03

Large boxes

For bulky-but-light items: bedding, pillows, lampshades, linens. Do not fill them with heavy things or they'll be impossible to lift and prone to blowing out the bottom.

04

Wardrobe and dish-pack boxes

Wardrobe boxes have a hanging bar so clothes move on their hangers. Dish-pack (or dish-barrel) boxes are double-walled for glassware, plates, and fragile items.

METHODOLOGY

The calculator starts from typical box counts for a home your size, then adjusts for the things that actually change the number: how many people live there, whether you're a minimalist or a packrat, how much you cook, how many books you own, and whether you have a garage or storage to clear out. Add 10-15% as a buffer, since running out mid-pack costs more time than a few spare boxes cost money.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Moving box FAQ

How many boxes do I need to move a 3-bedroom house?+

Plan on roughly 60-90 boxes for a typical three-bedroom home, weighted toward small and medium sizes, plus a few wardrobe and dish-pack boxes. Households with more books, kitchenware, or collections trend to the higher end.

What size boxes should I buy the most of?+

Medium boxes. They handle the widest range of household items and are the size professional packers reach for most. Buy more mediums than any other type, then smalls for heavy items and a handful of larges for bulky-light items.

Should I buy new or used moving boxes?+

Used boxes save money and are fine for most items if they're clean and structurally sound. Buy new for anything fragile or heavy, where a weakened box can fail. Many people mix both.

How do I avoid running out of boxes?+

Estimate your count, then add a 10-15% buffer. Running out mid-pack forces a store run at the worst time. Leftover boxes are easy to return, resell, or give away.

What goes in a dish-pack box?+

Dish-pack (or dish-barrel) boxes are double-walled and built for fragile kitchen items: plates, glasses, stemware, and ceramics. Use plenty of packing paper and pack plates vertically, on edge, not stacked flat.
