What movers actually cost.

The calculator above gives you a personal number. Below: how those numbers get built, what drives them up or down, and the paperwork that decides whether a quote can grow after delivery.

How much does a moving company cost?

Pricing varies sharply by tier and by distance. Published prices for a 3-bedroom household:

  • Local move (under 50 miles): about $2,240–$2,560 with a full-service crew (MoveAdvisor’s arithmetic: four movers for seven hours at $80 an hour each, plus an hour of travel), $351–$893 for a moving container (PODS’s local samples, June 2026), and $79–$165 for a one-day truck rental before fuel (HireAHelper’s customer-paid averages).
  • Long-distance move (about 2,400 miles): $9,255 full-service, $4,662 container, and $2,949–$3,355 for a rental truck before fuel (HireAHelper’s 2026 medians). MovingPlace had $7,955, $4,004 and $2,485 at 2,000 miles in October 2026. At 500 to 600 miles, This Old House found $3,500–$6,900 full-service.

What changes the price the most?

In order of impact: volume, distance, service tier, and timing.

Volume swings the headline number more than anything else, and bedroom count is a poor guide to it. Distance matters most past 500 miles. Service tier is the choice you control most: at about 2,400 miles, HireAHelper’s medians put full service at roughly twice a container and three times a truck rental. Peak season (May–September) costs more: BLS’s seasonal factors for moving, storage and freight put July about 6.6% above February.

Hidden costs to watch for

Things that don’t show up in the headline quote:

  • Long-carry fees. If the truck can’t park within ~75 feet of your door, $50–$150 per 50-foot increment.
  • Stair fees. Per flight, per item, or per move. A walkup adds $200–$600 routinely.
  • Shuttle fees. When the long-distance truck can’t reach your destination, $400–$900 to shuttle to a smaller truck.
  • Storage-in-transit. If your dates don’t align, the mover’s tariff bills storage by weight and by day, plus a separate charge to haul your goods out of storage.
  • Valuation coverage. Full Value Protection is the federal default. The $0.60/lb option applies only if you waive it in writing. Full Value costs extra: one mover’s published 2026 chart prices a house-size move at $220–$661.

How to cut your moving cost

Five moves that have real savings, in order of impact:

  1. Declutter first. Every cubic foot you don’t move is the cheapest cubic foot.
  2. Move off-peak. Winter costs least: BLS’s seasonal factors for moving, storage and freight put July about 6.6% above February.
  3. Pick the right tier. For a 3-bedroom move of 2,400 miles, HireAHelper’s 2026 medians were $9,255 full-service and $4,662 by container.
  4. Get three written quotes. FMCSA says to compare written estimates from several movers. If one comes in far below the rest, ask what survey it was based on.
  5. Pack yourself. HireAHelper’s August 2026 guide puts professional packing for a 3-bedroom at about $850–$1,100. Supplies are extra: U-Haul’s 3–4 bedroom box kit is $453.34.

Questions, plainly answered.

How does the moving calculator estimate cubic feet?

Each item in the catalog has an industry-standard cubic-foot value derived from common dimensions and packing efficiency for that piece of furniture. We sum those values across the rooms you select, then add a 10–15% buffer for awkward shapes and packing material. The total is the volume a mover would quote against, not your raw furniture footprint.

Is MovingCalculator.io free to use?

Yes. The calculator and the saved-quote planner are free for consumers. Moving companies that want a themed embed of the calculator on their own site can sign up for free as well. Every embed includes a small attribution link back to MovingCalculator.io.

How accurate is the truck size recommendation?

Accurate enough to ballpark a one-truck vs. two-truck job and to push back on under-quotes. We index each truck size against its real cargo volume and compare against your buffered cubic feet. For a binding mover quote, expect a walkthrough or video survey to refine the number. That is industry standard and shouldn't be skipped on a long-distance move.

Can I save my estimate and come back later?

Yes. Two ways: every estimate produces a shareable URL with the calculator state encoded into it, so you can bookmark or send it. If you create a free planner account, your estimate is saved server-side and you can track multiple mover quotes against it for side-by-side comparison.

Does MovingCalculator.io sell my data to movers?

No. Your details only reach a mover when you send them: either to the nearby movers you pick at the end of the calculator, or through a moving company's calculator on their own site, which goes to that company. We never sell it to a lead marketplace. Until you send, save or share it, your estimate stays in your browser.

What's the difference between binding and non-binding mover quotes?

A binding quote is a fixed price the mover commits to, based on a documented inventory; you pay that amount even if the actual volume comes in higher. A non-binding quote is an estimate that recalculates against actual weight or volume on move day. Convenient for the mover, risky for you. Long-distance and full-service moves should generally be binding.

What does the 15% buffer cover?

Packing material (bubble wrap, blankets, boxes for loose items), the awkward void space between rectangular items, and the small things you forgot to enter. Most professional surveys add a similar buffer because real cargo never packs at 100% efficiency.

How do I embed the calculator on my moving company's site?

Sign up, complete onboarding, and copy the iframe snippet from your dashboard. The themed version uses your business name, logo, primary color, and a CTA you choose. Lead emails route to the contact email on your account. The install guide covers WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow.

Why is the calculator free for moving companies?

A fair thing to ask of anything free. The calculator helps your own site turn visitors into quote requests, and those go straight to your inbox. In return, the embed carries a small “by MovingCalculator.io” credit. That visibility is how we grow, and we earn from optional Featured directory placement, never from your leads or your data. You get a lead tool at no cost; we get a little reach.

Do you keep or resell the leads my calculator generates?

Every quote request from your embedded calculator goes to you, and only you. We never sell leads, share them, or route them to another moving company. We do store a copy so your dashboard has a backup if an email misfires, but it stays private to your account. The full commitment is in our privacy policy.
